What is FMCSA operating authority?
FMCSA operating authority is the permission a for-hire motor carrier or broker must hold to transport regulated commodities or arrange transportation in interstate commerce, tied to an MC number and dependent on required insurance and process-agent filings.
To operate for-hire, a carrier or broker files with FMCSA and must maintain insurance (e.g. BMC-91) and a process agent (BOC-3). Authority can be active, pending, revoked or suspended, and those statuses are dated official records.
A revocation or suspension is a documented wind-down risk for anyone extending credit to or insuring a carrier, and a buying signal for firms acquiring idle equipment. A newly-granted authority marks a carrier now cleared to haul.
