What is an NPI?
A National Provider Identifier (NPI) is a unique 10-digit number that identifies a US healthcare provider or organization, assigned through the CMS NPPES registry and used across billing and administrative transactions.
Every covered healthcare provider and organization must obtain an NPI from the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES). The NPI registry is public and includes name, specialty (taxonomy) and practice location.
A newly-enumerated NPI marks a provider or practice entering the field — a first-appearance record used as a new-provider lead, before any commercial roster would reflect it.
